Health note: For decisions about drinking water safety, CDC and EPA recommend a state-certified laboratory. If a kit shows a problem, confirm it with a certified lab and contact your local health department.

First, check the option that isn’t a kit

Your local health department may test well water for little or nothing. EPA notes some provide private well testing for free. You can also find a nearby state-certified lab through EPA’s directory Find a state-certified lab (EPA directory) →. For a basic bacteria-and-nitrate test, call them first.

How we compared (published specs and lab documentation only)

  • Who analyzes the sample: you (DIY), or a lab?
  • Does it cover the CDC/EPA annual baseline: coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, TDS (CDC)?
  • Add-ons: metals (arsenic, lead), PFAS, radiologicals.
  • Bacteria logistics: how the sample gets to the lab.
  • Price: listed only if we confirmed it on the seller’s page on the date above. Otherwise, check the current price.

Mail-in lab kits: best for real answers

Choose this if you’re testing a well for the first time, buying a home, have an infant in the house, or need a result you’ll base treatment decisions on.

  • Tap Score Essential is the lower-cost well panel. Its listed panel includes the metals (arsenic, lead) and the nitrate and bacteria tests most well owners need. Tap Score describes its labs as independent, certified and accredited.
  • Tap Score Advanced costs more, but the seller says it includes overnight shipping to the lab in an insulated cooler. Bacteria samples are time-sensitive, so that matters if bacteria is your main concern. The seller also says it’s more thorough than the Essential kit.
  • PFAS is a separate, specialized test. Check which PFAS compounds a kit reports before ordering. PFAS in Private Wells: Testing and Treatment

Ask any mail-in lab whether it’s certified for each test in your state. Some states’ rules, such as home-sale testing, require a state-certified lab.

DIY kits: best for screening and monitoring

Choose this if you want a quick check between annual lab tests, or you want to confirm a softener or iron filter is still working.

Know the limits. A UMass Amherst study of eight home kits that measure iron, copper, manganese and fluoride found “high variability”: some kits worked well and others didn’t. The researchers noted that single-parameter kits and multi-parameter strips behave differently. DIY strips also can’t measure contaminants like arsenic, PFAS or uranium at the low levels that matter for health.

If a DIY kit shows bacteria or high nitrate, confirm with a certified lab and call your health department.
