There are three ways to test a private well: DIY strips and kits, mail-in lab tests you order online, and a state-certified laboratory (often arranged through your health department). They aren’t interchangeable.
- DIY strips and kits are quick screening tools. They can flag a possible problem, but they aren’t a basis for health decisions.
- Mail-in lab tests send your sample to a laboratory. Check whether the lab is certified for the tests you need.
- A state-certified lab is the standard for health decisions like bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead and PFAS. Find a state-certified lab (EPA directory) →
